The next Ignite NYC takes place in conjunction with the O'Reilly Strata Conference on Monday, October 22nd at the Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers in the Metropolitan Ballroom. Our theme stems from the conference's focus on data science and vizualization, with an focus on the wonder and mysteries that data science is stumbling into.
Tikva Morowait, Director and Curator of Ignite NYC, and Julie Steele, Content Editor at O'Reilly Media, will be co-hosting the event.
Ticketing
- Tickets must be purchased online. (We will not be taking cash for tickets at the door.)
- Ignite attendees do not need a Strata badge

Max is a data strategy consultant based in New York. He helps organizations collect, analyze, present, and act on data. Previously he was OkCupid's data scientist and handled the big data side of OkTrends, the company's well-known blog. His side projects have been featured in the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, WNYC and more.
Erik Norlander-- "Game Show Theory"
Erik has been an engineering partner at Google Ventures since 2010. Prior to that, he led the team that built Google’s next generation display ad serving system. He helped Google’s acquisition and technical integration for Doubleclick and led a team that built statistical modeling and machine learning models for Google’s ad businesses. Erik was also a developer on Google’s core engineering infrastructure, including a distributed file system that Google.com and Gmail rely on today.
Lucianne Walkowicz-- "The Truth is Out There: A Data-Driven Hunt for Life in the Universe"
Lucianne is an astrophysicist and artist who studies stellar magnetism and how it affects a planet's ability to support life, using data from NASA's Kepler mission. She's going to talk about a new project, which is her first foray into full-on X-Files territory.
Fred Benenson-- "Skynet via the Darknet: How We're Unwittingly Training the Next Generation of Strong AI"
Fred is Kickstarter's Data Engineer and a contributor at Wired Magazine. He's passionate about copyright, cyberlaw and Rubik's cubes.
Zanab Hussain-- "Rescaling Your Irrational Fear of Dying"
Zanab is a data scientist with SimpleReach and a co-organize or PyLadies NYC, a group that mentors female developers to become active leaders in the opn-source Python community.
Andres Glusman-- "The Truth Is Out There"
Andres oversees Product, Strategy & Community teams at Meetup. He's also a card-carrying member of the Lean Startup movement. In his spare time, he raises confident daughters and is learning to surf.
Jeanne Pinder-- "It's About the Money"
Jeanne is a seasoned journalist who worked for the New York Times for 23 years before founding ClearHealthCosts, which helps the average medical consumer compare prices.
Arikia Millikan-- "20 Things I Learned from Working With the Kurt Cobain of Statistics"
Arikia is a Brooklyn-based freelance journalist and emerging entrepreneur. She has written articles for The Atlantic, Danger Room, Thought Catalog, and Psychology Today, and is the youngest person ever to be promoted to editor at Wired. From 2009- 2011, she worked with Nate Silver conducting research for his New York Times' best-seller, The Signal and the Noise.
Gilad Lotan- "Human vs. Algorithm: Data As the Final Frontier"
Gilad is the Chief Data Scientist at
SocialFlow, a New York startup that analyzes massive amounts of social data. There was a time when Gilad dseigned and built theater sets in Hong Kong Kong. His work has been presented at the Personal Democracy Forum, TED, and SXSW.
Benjamin Jackson- "Mind Reading, Cocaine Addiction, and Performance Anxiety: Lessons from Cognitive Psychology"
Ben worked on iPhone and iPad apps at the New York Times. Now he works on the Longform app, in addition to reporting on technology, politics, and health. He contributes regularly to The Atlantic, BuzzFeed, and The Next Web.
Jake Porway-- "Truth, Damn Truth, and What's Good Enough"
Jake is the founder and executive director of DataKind, an organization that brings together leadng data scientists with hight impact social organizations to better collect, analyze and visualize data in service of humanity.
James Patten-- "Beyond Visualization: Bringing Data Off the Screen And Into the Physical World"
James is an interaction designer and inventor working at the intersection of the physical and digital worlds. He has a P.h.D from the MIT Media Lab and is a TED Fellow. His work has been displayed in the Museum of Modern Art, on stage with Bjork, and in Barney's displays.
Matt Wallaert-- "A Tale of Two Truths: Women Are Terrible Savers (Until You Pay Them Fairly)"
Matt is the Lead Scientist at GetRaised, a service geared at women to help them get raises. Originally an academic, he started translating what we know about the psychology of human behavior into creating products and programs that change those behaviors to produce long-term satisfaction and solve social problems.
Abe Stanway-- "Zen and the Art of Writing Commit Logs"
Abe
is a consummate hacker and is currently employed at Etsy. He was previously a hackNY Fellow and is the author of commitlogsfromlastnight.com.
Claudia Perlich-- "The Secret Life of Your Internet Browser"
Claudia is the Chief Scientist of M6D, building target models for display advertising. She is also a professor at NYU's Stern School of Business, where is is teaching a course on Data Mining and Business Intelligence. Previously, she was with the Predictive Modeling Group at IBM research.
